Each area
In White Town
The French Quarter between the canal and the sea: quiet streets of colonial villas, the promenade, cafés and most of the sights within a few minutes on foot. The most convenient base for a first visit, and usually the priciest.
In the Heritage Town and Grand Bazaar
The Tamil quarter west of the canal, around the Grand Bazaar and the big temples. Busier and better value than White Town, and still a short walk from the seafront.
Near Serenity Beach
The fishing villages and surf beach just north of town, around Kottakuppam. Relaxed guesthouses and beach stays, about fifteen minutes by road from White Town.
Near Auroville
The township north-west of Pondicherry, set in red earth and forest around the Matrimandir. Guesthouses and homestays for a slower stay; you will want a scooter or car to get around.
Near Auroville Beach
The coast below Auroville along the East Coast Road. Beach resorts and guesthouses within reach of both Auroville and the town.
Near Paradise Beach
South of town around the Chunnambar backwaters, Paradise Beach and Eden Beach. Resorts and quiet stays, about twenty minutes by road from the centre.
