The Tamil Quarter sits just across the old canal from White Town — a five-minute walk. Base in White Town and wander over; it’s all on foot.
Cross the old canal that once divided the French town from the Tamil town and Pondicherry changes character completely. The Tamil Quarter — officially Heritage Town — trades White Town’s mustard-yellow restraint for saturated colour: houses painted turquoise, pink and green, with carved wooden thresholds, temple gopurams rising over the lanes, and everyday street life the French side doesn’t have.
Most visitors never leave the French side. The Tamil Quarter is a five-minute walk away, and it’s the richer half.
This is where the working temples are — Sri Manakula Vinayagar chief among them — and where the Sacred Heart Basilica anchors the western edge. Architecturally it’s a distinct Franco-Tamil style: colonnaded verandas and thinnai porches, colour where White Town keeps to ochre. Come here to walk and watch, not to tick off sights.
